Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein
The Sociedade Beneficente Israelita Brasileira Albert Einstein celebrated its 60-year anniversary in 2015, doing the things it likes the most: innovate and grow, always with excellence. Everything started small in a meeting of friends in 1955, where Dr. Manoel Tabacow Hidal presented his idea to create a hospital. The dream became the Jewish community’s commitment to offer the Brazilian populace a reference in quality medical practice. But the intention was to go beyond simply building a hospital. Built with funds from donations and the work of a group of dedicated people, the cornerstone was laid in 1958. Although some departments formed during the 1960s, the Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein officially opened in 1971. Since then, the hospital has become a reference in state-of-the-art treatments and humanized care and has expanded its borders with social responsibility actions, education, and research activities.

He also joined in on actions and mobilizations executed by Meu Rio. “Returning to Brasil after graduating from MIT has been pleasantly unsettling. My time learning from and thinking about the experiences of individuals and groups striving to make their immediate lives better through new modes of political action has reminded me of why I came to MIT: that despite seemingly insurmountable barriers, solutions are always possible.”
- Carey Dunfey (Urban Studies and Planning ’17) developed a framework for impact evaluations tailored specifically to the work of Meu Rio. A database was created alongside the framework to assist the team in systematically recording gains and setbacks during their political campaigns. “Working in Brazil provided me with an incredible opportunity to learn about the innovative work of local, small organizations that are actively trying to improve their democratic processes. This experience inspired me to seek out and build communities committed to creating progressive and sustainable social change.”

She also created reports on DefeZap’s first year of activity that will contribute to the development of an initiative with great potential for improving the quality of life of the less privileged. “Working with NOSSAS’s team was a wonderful opportunity of knowing young Latin Americans willing to work for improving other people lives, even against adversity. Being able to help them in that task was a truly fulfilling experience.”

Via Varejo
Via Varejo (VV) is part of the largest retail conglomerate in Brazil. With ~USD$10 billion in revenues spread across ~1000 brick and mortar (B&M) stores and online, VV is the largest retailer focused in electronics and furniture in Brazil. It currently has ~30% of market share in most product categories, including cell phones, TVs, refrigerators, washing machines, furniture, and other home appliances. It operates under the brands of Casas Bahia (B&M and online), Ponto Frio (B&M and online), and Extra (online only) and other smaller brands. It has a very wide customer profile, serving higher end consumers (class A and B) but most of its revenues come from lower income consumers (class C and D). Besides selling merchandise, VV currently operates a strong financial services division, which is mainly based on three pillars:
- Consumer credit: Given that most of revenue comes from lower income consumers, VV currently operates a credit operation with enables customers to pay for the goods in several installments that can fit into the consumer monthly budget; interest rates are charged.
- Co-branded credit cards: VV has a partnership with the largest private local banks (Itaú and Bradesco) to issue co-branded credit cards, generating revenue based on commission for new applications and profit share from the credit card operation.
- Insurance and services: VV also commercializes insurance products (such as extended warranty and protection plan) and services (such as technical support and product installation).

MIT Center for Civic Media Promise Tracker Program
The Center for Civic Media develops and studies technologies to support social change and civic engagement. We work collaboratively with communities across the globe to design and implement tools that facilitate the production of data and media to support social organizing. With a multi-disciplinary perspective, we explore platforms to better understand existing media ecosystems and amplify the voices of marginalized groups. Over the past 3 years, we have worked with civil society groups across Brazil to develop and test Promise Tracker - a collaborative data collection platform that helps communities gather and leverage data to advocate for greater accountability. Our team explores how technology can be used to support social change but recognizes that the tools are just a piece of the larger social processes that are necessary to bring about positive transformation by citizens.

- Holly Josephs (CEE ’16) created an online social network for the non-profit organizations in São José dos Campos, developed a mobile museum to show the benefits of social technology and solidarity economy, and designed a video game to practice personal economic interactions using a local alternative currency. The game allows the player to spend as he/she normally would for a week in the national currency and then repeat the purchases in a local currency to show the difference in money flows in the local, national, and international economy just from this person’s choices. “Participating in this project has helped me organize my thoughts about how to increase the connectedness of social services in Boston or New York. I now have a model to follow to create a similar tool for a similar problem that all social workers complain about in American cities. And it will probably be easier to build in English :)” Read more about Holly's experience here!
